    Habit
    Climber 1–2 m. long; stems red-brown, slender, densely covered with long adpressed and ± spreading hairs when young, very soon glabrescent and epidermis peeling off to reveal a pale surface.
    Leaves
    Leaf-blades oblong, elliptic-oblong or oblong-ovate, 3–8.5 cm. long, 1.5–2.8 cm. wide, shortly acuminate at the apex, rounded or ± cordate at the base, with sparse adpressed hairs above particularly on the venation and longer denser adpressed hairs beneath again mainly on the venation; petioles 0.5–1.7(–4.5) cm. long, hairy; stipules leafy, ovate, 5–6 mm. long, 3–4 mm. wide, ± glabrous except at margins, reflexed.
    Flowers
    Flowers in compact bracteate inflorescences; peduncles long and slender, 2–8(–12) cm. long, glabrous; pedicels 1–2 mm. long, but attaining 8–10 mm. in fruit; bracts 3, leafy, ovate, 1.3 cm. long, 0.9–1.8 cm. wide, ± acute at the apex, ± cordate at the base, glabrous except for few ciliae on the margins.
    Calyx
    Calyx-tube globose or ovoid, 2–3 mm. long, glabrous; lobes (2–)3(–4) leafy, ovate, 0.8–1.3 cm. long, 3–7 mm. wide, eventually ± scarious and persistent.
    Corolla
    Corolla white, glabrous outside; tube 1.3–2.1 cm. long; lobes short, ovate, 1.3–1.8 mm. long, 1.5–1.8 mm. wide.
    Anthers
    Anthers situated about halfway in corolla-tube in long-styled flowers, the tips just exserted in short-styled flowers.
    Pistil
    Style 1.6–1.7 cm. long in long-styled flowers, the style-arms and stigma-lobes together 2.5 mm. long, just exserted; style 6–8.5 mm. long in short-styled flowers, the arms and lobes together 3–4 mm. long.
    Fruits
    Fruit dark red-violet or blackish, globose, 8–9 mm. in diameter.
    Habitat
    Undergrowth of fairly dry forest; 1080 m.
