    Habit
    Perennial or annual herbs, araneose-lanate or glandular, often acaulescent.
    Leaves
    Leaves alternate or radical, entire to lyrate-pinnatifid.
    Capitulum
    Capitula heterogamous radiate, solitary, large and many-flowered.
    Phyllaries
    Phyllaries free, many-seriate, scarious-hyaline on the margins, the outer phyllaries usually with apical appendages.
    Receptacle
    Receptacle flat, fimbrilliferous-alveolate with walls produced into setae.
    Florets
    Disk-florets hermaphrodite, numerous, sometimes central florets functionally male; corollas infundibuliform, regularly 5-lobed; anther bases entire or shortly sagittate; style branches thickened-connate nearly to the apex. Ray-florets female, sometimes neuter, uniseriate; rays strap-shaped, 3-denticulate; staminodes sometimes present; style branches free and lanceolate.
    Fruits
    Achenes cylindric-turbinate, ribbed or winged, with the lateral wings folding to form 2 linear chambers on one side, sometimes transversally rugose on the other side, with or without a basal coma of long hairs, otherwise villous or glabrous; pappus c. 2-seriate of delicate hyaline scales, the inner pappus of 5–10 scales equalling the achene in length, the outer pappus smaller.
