Morphology General Habit
Glabrous perennial herb, with tuberous cylindrical or subspherical roots to 2 cm. in diameter, produced in chains; annual stems 1–2, to 20 cm. high, produced from ± 4 cm. below ground, purplish at ground-level, white below.

Leaves subsessile, lanceolate, to 5 × 1.5 cm., apex acute, margin minutely toothed; stipules glandular, minute.

Cymes of solitary cyathia on peduncles to 12 mm. long, usually much less; bracts shorter than the involucre, free, oblong, ± 2.3 × 1.8 mm., margin denticulate.
