Leaves to 9 × 6 cm, suborbicular to ovate, sometimes reddened, both surfaces scabridulous with usually numerous stiff cartilaginous hairs, margin tightly crisped and densely hairy, midrib prominent beneath; petiole c. 6 mm long; stipules c. 0.5 mm in diameter, glandular.

Cymes axillary, 3–4-forked; peduncles to c. 8 cm long, cyme branches to 15 mm long, both with conspicuous scattered cartilaginous prickles 0.2–1 mm long; bracts joined in a bract-cup enveloping the cyathium, c. 10 × 16 mm, shallowly notched between rounded lobes, whitish with dark green to purplish veining and the surface with scattered cartilaginous outgrowths.
