Morphology General Habit
Glabrous perennial herb, with fleshy rounded tuberous roots to 2 cm. thick; stems fleshy, 1–3 from each tuber, ± 4 mm. thick, rarely branching, erect to 4 cm. or decumbent to 15 cm. long, rooting and forming further tubers.

Leaves ovate, to 5 × 2.5 cm., base tapering abruptly, apex acute, margin entire, lamina usually purple tinged, with green veining; stipules filamentous to 1 mm. long, brown, usually deciduous.

Cymes on peduncles to 1.5 cm. long, 1–2-forked; bract-cup ± equalling the involucre, ± 6 × 4 mm., notched for ± 1/3 between acute converging apices, dark green with prominent white midribs.

Cyathia ± 5.5 × 3.5 mm., with barrel-shaped involucres; glandular rim 2 mm. high, yellow; lobes rounded, 1 × 1.2 mm.

Male flowers:bracteoles laciniate; stamens 3.3 mm. long. Female flower:perianth obvious in fruit, of 3 3-toothed lobes and 4 mm. in diameter; styles 1 mm. long, joined at the base, with thickened rugulose bifid apices.
