    Habit
    Shrubby subsucculent herb 0.6–2 m. tall; stems thick and branched at the base, becoming woody, covered with short hairs.
    Leaves
    Leaf-blades ovate to ovate-lanceolate, 2.8–12 cm. long, 1.5–3.4 cm. wide, acute at the apex, cuneate or rounded and then cuneate at the base, shortly hairy with bristly hairs above and on the nerves beneath; petiole 0.4–1.4 cm. long; stipules with 5–7 hairy filiform setae bearing conspicuous colleters, 0.6–1.2 cm. long from a short base.
    Inflorescences
    Inflorescences branched and often with axillary inflorescences in 1–3 axils below the apex, each a pedunculate 2–10-flowered cyme; in small, plants there may be only 13 flowers; peduncles 0.6–8.5 cm. long; pedicels 1–6 mm. long.
    Flowers
    Flowers white, sometimes tinged reddish, not dimorphic.
    Calyx
    Calyx-tube urceolate, 4–5.5 mm. long, 3–5 mm. wide, shortly adpressed hairy; lobes linear to spathulate, subequal, 0.7–1.7 cm. long, 1.5–6.7 mm. wide, or some ligulate, 4 mm. long, 0.5 mm. wide, with bristly hairs.
    Corolla
    Corolla-tube 6.5–12.5 cm. long, always some long examples in every inflorescence, 1–2.5 mm. wide, dilated at the apex to 3–4 mm. for a distance of 1–1.6 cm.; lobes ovate, 0.9–1.8 cm. long, 4–8 mm. wide, sparsely hairy outside, and with throat-hairs extending over the base inside.
    Stamens
    Stamens included.
    Pistil
    Style exserted 0.4–1.2 cm., stigma 2–3.5 mm. long.
    Fruits
    Fruit oblong, 5–7 mm. tall, 7–9.5 mm. across; veined limb-tube of calyx forming a rim 2.5 mm. tall; valves 4–5 mm. tall; intravalvular opening 5 mm. long and wide.
    Seeds
    Seeds angular-ovoid.
    Habitat
    Grassland, scrub, upland evergreen forest, often in rocky places; 2060–3000 m.
