    Habit
    Shrubby herb to 2 m. tall, with 2–3 main stems from a woody rootstock; stems glabrous to densely covered with whitish or rusty-orange hairs.
    Leaves
    Leaves paired or in whorls of 3; leaf blades 5–15(16.5) x 0.7–3(5) cm., lanceolate or rarely ovate-lanceolate, acute at the apex, narrowed at the base, glabrous to velvety or pubescent, often ferruginous, sessile or petiole 0.5–1(2.5) cm. long; stipules with 3–7 linear setae 0.1–1.3 cm. long from a base 0.5–2.5 mm. long.

    Flowers white or bluish white or tinged purplish.
    Inflorescences
    Inflorescences 20–100-flowered, up to 14 cm. wide; primary peduncles up to 15 cm. long; bracteoles filamentous, up to 3 mm. long.
    Calyx
    Calyx tube glabrescent to velvety, often ferruginous, c. 1.5–2 mm. long and wide; lobes subequal, 3–7.5 mm. long, linear.

    Corolla tube 2–4.2 cm. long, 0.5–1.5 mm. wide at the base, dilated at the apex to 1.5–2.5 mm. wide for a distance of 3–5.5 mm., pubescent outside; lobes 3–6 x 1.5–2.9 mm., oblong or elliptic, acute or rather blunt; throat hairy.

    Stamens entirely included.
    Style
    Style exserted 1–6 mm., tomentose with white scaly papillae.
