Geophytic perennial herb with a napoid tuberous root to 7 cm. in diameter producing 1–3 subterranean stems 1–3 cm. long; annual stems 2–6 cm. high.

Leaves in rosettes at the apices of the stems, obovate, to ± 9 × 4.5 cm., apex rounded, margin entire, midrib prominent beneath, lamina glabrous, often flecked with red; petioles to 1 cm. long; stipules apparently absent; a few scale-like leaves also present, crowded at the stem base, ovate, to ± 4 × 2 mm.
