    Perennial; stems prostrate, simple or branched, rather fleshy, usually rooting at the lower nodes only, up to 50 cm. long.
    Leaves rather fleshy, opposite or alternate (often on the same plant) ovate, shortly petiolate, spreading, acute, rounded at the base, 8–15 × (2.5–) 4–8 mm.
    Flowers often numerous, axillary, solitary, pedicellate; pedicels filiform, up to 20 mm. long, reflexed and elongated in fruit.
    Calyx-segments 5 (or rarely 6), lanceolate, acute, 3–4 mm. long.
    Corolla white or pale pink, campanulate, deeply 5- (rarely 6-) lobed; lobes narrowly oblong, 4.5–6 (-8) mm. long, 5–7-nerved.
    Filaments filiform, glabrous, about 2/3 as long as corolla; anthers obtuse.
    Capsule globose, 2–3 mm. in diameter.

    Bogs, swamps, and by streamsides in upland grasslands, mainly 2100–2400 m. but descending by streamsides to 1500 m. and rarely ascending to 3000 m.
