General Description
Slender herb twining around and within the leaf rosettes of host bromeliad plants, producing leaves where exposed and inflorescences more-or-less within the leaf sheath "tanks" of the host plants; roots 9.5-67 cm long, 1-2.5 mm thick, solitary at each node, unbranched and turning purplish where exposed, growing into host's "tanks" and ramifying to produce a white root mass; internodes 6-18 cm long, 1.4-3 mm thick, lustrous green, terete; prophylls and cataphylls 9-15 mm long, clustered at nodes, clasping succeeding internode, soon withering and turning brown but more-or-less persistent. Foliage leaves often replaced by sympodial cataphylls. LEAVES: petiole 1.6-6.5 (-10.5) cm long, 1-1.9 (-2.5) mm thick, usually shorter than blade, occasionally longer, sulcate on adaxial surface with sharply angled margins, rounded abaxially, apical and basal geniculae much paler, sheath always highly reduced on all leaves seen; blade 5.4-8.9 x 2.2-5.6 cm, ovate to narrowly ovate, occasionally broadly ovate to broadly elliptic, 1.3-3.0 x longer than broad, coriaceous to stiffly coriaceous, darkish green and lustrous on adaxial surface, abaxially paler and also lustrous, apex acute, base obtuse, rounded, emarginate or subcordate, midrib very shallowly prominent adaxially in basal portion of blade, abaxially somewhat prominent, other venation embedded and obscured, primary lateral veins poorly differentiated, ca. 3-4, upper 2-3 forming an inframarginal collective vein on each side, the lower primary laterals running into the margin. INFLORESCENCE solitary at nodes, associated sympodial leaf always a cataphyll in specimens seen; peduncle 1.3-1.9 cm long, expanding from 1.5 mm diam. at base to 3-6 mm diam. at apex, conspicuously 4-9 ribbed, thickened and paler to whitish at apex, usually twisted at base to bring the inflorescence into an erect position; spathe 2.5-3.2 cm long, erect, persistent in fruit, differentiated into tube and blade, externally lustrous dirty olive green, internally purple, becoming blackish-purple at base and usually paler olive to green at margins, inner surface ribbed except for marginal region, the ribs relatively thick and shallow with flattened upper surfaces; spathe tube obconic, 0.9-1.2 cm long, 1-1.2 cm broad, margins supervolute and enclosing base of spadix, at anthesis the outer margin is held away from the inner; spathe blade forming an elliptical to subcircular opening ("gape") of 2.2-2.5 cm long x 1.6-2.2 cm wide, margins patent to somewhat revolute; spadix 1.1-1.9 cm long, 0.5-0.7 cm thick, subsessile, black-purple, pollen yellow when fresh, turning white, flowers 7-8 visible in right-handed spiral (Croat & Bunting 1979). INFRUCTESCENCE with 4-11 berries; berry 0.7 cm long, 0.5 cm diam., subglobose to obovoid, green when immature and then dark purplish where exposed to light, orange and glossy when mature. (Measurements made from living specimens in the field and spirit material).
So far known only from type locality: the agreste region of the state of Pernambuco.
Occurring in strict association with clumps of Hohenbergia sp. ( Bromeliaceae ) on exposed granitic-gneissic rock outcrops (inselbergs).
