        This species is accepted, and its native range is Zimbabwe to S. Africa.

    Habit
    Tree 8–30 m. tall; trunk armed with thorny bosses; branches glabrous, aculeate with aculei 1–5 mm. long, straight or slightly curved upwards.
    Leaves
    Leaves 8–25 cm. long; rhachis grooved above.
    Leaflets
    Leaflets sessile, opposite or subopposite, (2) 3–6-jugate, becoming progressively larger from the basal pair upwards to the apical one, terminal leaflet sometimes petiolulate or sometimes aborted; lamina 2–7 × 0·8–2·5 cm., lanceolate to narrowly elliptic and ± asymmetric, dotted with pellucid glands in the marginal sinuses only (in our area), acuminate and slightly retuse at the apex, margin serrate or crenulate-serrate, cuneate or obtuse and slightly callose-auriculate at the base; nerves very numerous and rather closely spaced.
    Inflorescences
    Inflorescence of terminal panicles 4–6 cm. long; bracts and bracteoles very small, caducous.
    Flowers
    Flowers 4-merous. Female flowers: not seen from our area. Male flowers: pedicellate, with pedicels 1–1·5 mm. long, usually in clusters at the ends of the panicle-branches; sepals 4, slightly united at the base, ovate, 0·6 mm. long; petals 2·7 × 1·3 mm., imbricate, elliptic; stamens 4; filaments 3·5 mm. long, linear; anthers dorsifixed, ovate, 1 mm. long; gynophore very short, surmounted by the vestigial ovary.
    Male
    Male flowers: pedicellate, with pedicels 1–1·5 mm. long, usually in clusters at the ends of the panicle-branches; sepals 4, slightly united at the base, ovate, 0·6 mm. long; petals 2·7 × 1·3 mm., imbricate, elliptic; stamens 4; filaments 3·5 mm. long, linear; anthers dorsifixed, ovate, 1 mm. long; gynophore very short, surmounted by the vestigial ovary.
    Female
    Female flowers: not seen from our area.
    Fruits
    Fruit 5 mm. in diam., subsessile, gland-dotted.
    Seeds
    Seed globose, black, shiny.
