    Type
Type: Ethiopia, Semien, Mt Taber, Schimper 1417 (B†, holo.; BM!, iso.)
    Habit
Biennial herb 0.8–2 m tall, ± hairy, usually glandular in the upper parts
    Leaves
Leaves lanceolate, at base up to 30 cm long and 6.5 cm wide, coarsely doubly toothed; stem leaves shortly petiolate, sometimes with very small pinnae or sessile and cordate, decreasing in size upwards
    Inflorescences
Inflorescence elongated, up to 50 cm, ± simple; bracts triangular, acute, coarsely toothed, almost as long as the pedicel or leafy and longer than pedicel; pedicels in fruit remaining short or sometimes elongating, 5–20 mm long
    Calyx
Calyx deeply 5-divided; lobes lanceolate oblong, 4–8 mm long, toothed or entire
    Corolla
Corolla yellow with purple centre, 14–28 mm in diameter
    Filaments
    Filaments all bearded
    Fruits
Capsule globose to ovoid, 8 mm long and wide
    Seeds
    Seeds striate.
    Ecology
    Montane grassland; 1800–3600 m
    Conservation
    Least Concern (LC); widespread
    Note
A collection from Kenya, Chyulu Hills, Luke 1104, has a laxer inflorescence and smaller flowers, but falls within the range of this taxon. A polymorphic species not clearly defined from V. brevipedicellatum (see note under that species), but worth recognising on account of the larger bracts. Typically in Ethiopia it has toothed calyx lobes as long as the capsule, a character which is seldom linked with the longer bracts elsewhere. The length of the fruiting pedicel is sometimes no longer than the capsules, and it would be interesting to study the correlation of length of the fruiting pedicel with other characters.
