    Habit
    Semi-parasitic herb, stem erect (10)20–55 cm. high, usually simple, pubescent, hairs whitish.
    Leaves
    Leaves usually erect and close to stem, 5–20 mm. long, linear to linear-lanceolate, hairs thick-based, scabrid.
    Inflorescences
    Inflorescences dense terminal spikes, elongating in fruit, several flowers out at the same time.
    Bracts
    Bracts imbricated, lanceolate, ciliate-pubescent on margins and midrib; bracteoles linear.
    Calyx
    Calyx tube 2–3 mm. long, teeth 1–2 mm. long, subulate at apex, 5-nerved, pubescent, hyaline between nerves.
    Corolla
    Corolla pink, violet or whitish, tube up to 11 mm. long, angled just below lobes, ± pubescent; lower lobes c. 4 mm. long, all narrow.
    Fruits
    Capsules 2–3 x 1.5 mm.

    Flowers in spikes, alternate, the upper ones opposite, sometimes occupying much of the stem, as long as the vegetative part of the stem; bracts similar to the leaves; upper bracts 10–20 mm long, longer than the calyx; lower bracts lanceolate, shorter than the calyx
    Calyx
    Calyx tubular, 5-ribbed, 6–12 mm long; calyx tube 2–5 mm long, 5-lobed, lobes unequal, lanceolate to triangular, 3–4 mm long, pubescent
    Corolla
    Corolla pink to violet or whitish tinged purple with a pink spot inside lower lip, 2-lipped; tube 12–14 mm long, bent just above the calyx tube and expanding distally, pubescent to glandular-pubescent outside; lobes of the lower lip fused to more than half their length; lobes ± 3 mm long, acute, the upper lobes shorter
    Fruits
    Capsule oblong, 4 mm long, 1.5 mm wide, usually included in the calyx, acute with persistent style or base of style.
