    Type
Type: Ethiopia, Demerki, Mt Bachit, Schimper II: 1149 (K!, holo.; BM, P!, S, iso.)
    Habit
Perennial herb with numerous wiry branches 10–45 cm, ascending from base and ultimately erect, rooting at lower nodes, ± glandular-pilose on the younger parts, shortly pubescent in two lines or nearly glabrous on the old stems; nodes 5–16 mm apart
    Leaves
Leaves oblong to ovate, 5–11(–17) mm long, 3–4(–9) mm wide, rounded or cuneate at base into a short petiole, apex obtuse, margins entire
    Inflorescences
    Inflorescence of terminal racemes, lax
    Pedicel
    Pedicels 2–3 mm long
    Calyx
Calyx 4-lobed (or 5 with a minute posterior segment); lobes oblanceolate, 4 mm long, glandular-pilose
    Corolla
Corolla pale blue, white or pink, 4–5-lobed, 7–9 mm in diameter; lobes ± 5 mm long
    Fruits
Capsule obcordate, ± 4 mm long, ± 3 mm wide, compressed, sparingly glandular-pubescent on upper part, shorter than calyx
    Seeds
    Seeds yellowish, angularovoid, nearly smooth.
    Ecology
Borders of montane forest and in alpine zone; 2000–4100 m
    Conservation
    Least Concern (LC)
    Note
    O. Hedberg, who knows this plant very well in the field, considers that the variants described and named as distinct taxa cannot be maintained, and we agree with this conclusion. This extreme variation may be accounted for at least in part by the wide range of high altitude habitats, from moist dark bamboo forests to open frosty alpine slopes.
