Habit
Slender, scrambling scrub with grey, slightly corky bark on older branches, with numerous fine up to 0.8(–1) cm long straight spines, rarely mixed with somewhat curved fine spines
Indumentum
Indumentum of long straight white hairs, scattered stellate hairs and scattered shorter glandular hairs on younger parts
Leaves
Leaves scattered on younger branches, with scattered long straight hairs and stellate hairs; petiole 1–2.5 cm long, unarmed; blade rounded to reniform, usually broader than long, 1.2–2.5 x 1.2–3 cm, apex rounded, base cordate
Inflorescences
Inflorescences pseudoterminal or lateral, few- or occasionally one-flowered; peduncle very short; pedicel 5–15 mm long
Calyx
Calyx hemispherical, c. 3 mm long, with lanceolate lobes, with indumentum of long hairs
Corolla
Corolla much exceeding the calyx, with short tube, fused campanulate part c. 3 mm long, and 4–5 mm long lobes, colour not observed
Stamens
Stamens with c. 0.5 mm long filaments, thecae c. 4 mm long
Fruits
Fruits c. 7 mm long, probably yellowish, on reflexed c. 2.5–3 cm long pedicels.
Distribution
N3 not known elsewhere.
Ecology
Altitude range 400–700 m.
Note
Near S. cordatum Forssk., from which it differs in the long, spreading, bristly hairs on young parts of stems, leaves and inflorescences. The straight spines of S. cymbalariifolium are also usually longer and more numerous than the spines in S. cordatum.
