    Erect, coarsely prickly perennial 1–2 m tall
    Indumentum
    The indument of simple, uniseriate hairs sets this species apart from other species of section Lasiocarpa, but habit, leaf morphology, inflorescence structure, floral and fruit morphology are all normal for the section.
    Note
    Native to Costa Rica through Panama. Cultivated for its fruits, which have a sweet-tart flavor.
