    During his revision of this species for the Flora Zambesiaca area, Gonçalves (1996) concluded that the three species S. tettense Klotzsch, S. renschii Vatke and S. kwebense C.H. Wright were conspecific, forming a single polymorphic species which exhibits “great morphological and ecological diversity”, with Klotzsch’s epithet taking precedence as the legitimate name for the species. Within this, however, he recognised two varieties distinguishable on their stellate hairs having a glandular (var. tettense) or an eglandular (var. renschii) central ray. He did not consider that these varieties were separable on geographical or ecological terms. Examination of innumerable specimens from eastern and southern Africa for the FTEA treatment has verified that this taxon does indeed exhibit considerable morphological variation, but that some is eco-geographically associated. I consider that the variation exhibited by these taxa can be recognised morpho-geographically and that the two species S. kwebense and ‘ S. renschii’ should be recognised specifically, and that within each two infraspecific variants should probably also be given formal taxonomic recognition. Unfortunately, the isotypes of S. tettense are fragmentary specimens, but short viscid glandular hairs are clearly present, and the flowers on the BM specimen are 5-merous. This together with other characters given both in the protologue and in Bitter’s (1921) later elaboration of this species, particularly the description of its pubescence, which he presumably derived from the actual holotype, suggest that S. tettense is conspecific with the glandular-haired variant of ‘ S. renschii’ and must therefore be adopted as the correct name for this species. As Gonçalves found, this species exhibits considerable vegetative and floral variability. Though characterised by prickly stems, the prickles not only vary in size but can also be sparse, dense, or even absent either from young stems and branches or from older woody stems; in some regions (e.g. K 4) they can be completely absent. The prickles are usually confined to stems, but can occur sparingly on petioles and on the upper and/or lower midribs as well as on some of the larger leaf veins. Occasionally they can also occur sparingly on the peduncles. Though the major differences in pubescence have been given formal recognition, intermediate types are found on some specimens. Floral morphology too can be variable, and although flowers on the two varieties tettense and renschii are predominantly 5- and 4-merous respectively, in some areas (e.g. Zambia) both 4- and 5-merous flowers can occur on the same plant. Indeed on the isotype of S. tettense, a dissected flower had 5 anthers but only 4 calyx lobes and lobes. Anther length too can vary both within a single flower or between flowers on the same specimen.
