    Habit
    Annual up to 1·5 m. tall, very like T. annua but differing in its fruits, which have aculei about 120 in number not so conspicuously broadened at the base and densely setose-ciliate except in the upper third.

    The fruit body is also puberulous and not so deeply honeycombed.

    Habit
    Annual or short-lived perennial, much resembling T. annua.
    Diagnostic
    Differing in the fruits which are densely covered in long simple hairs, obscuring the fruit body ( T. annua forma piligera very sparsely covered in hairs) and principally in the number of spines on each of the four fruit-valves (± 30 in T. trichocarpa, ± 20 in T. annua ).
