    Habit
    Tree up to 8(–15) m. tall, terrestrial or hemi-epiphytic.
    Twigs
    Leafy twigs 3–5 mm. thick, glabrous or white puberulous, periderm sometimes flaking off when dry.
    Leaves
    Leaves in spirals; lamina coriaceous, oblanceolate to obovate, 6–20 × 3–8 cm., apex acuminate, base acute to attenuate, margin entire; both surfaces glabrous; lateral veins 5–7(–8) pairs, tertiary venation reticulate; petiole 1.5–4 cm. long, ± 3 mm. thick, epiderm not flaking off; stipules partly connate, (0.5–)1–2(–3) cm. long, minutely white puberulous or almost glabrous, persistent.
    Infructescences
    Figs 1(–3) in the leaf-axils; peduncle 0.5–2.5 cm. long in E. Africa; basal bracts ± 4 mm. long, persistent.

    Receptacle globose to obovoid (and usually on stipes up to 1 cm. long) or pyriform, 3–5 cm. in diameter when fresh, 2–3 cm. when dry, often somewhat scabrous, pale green to pale yellow at maturity; wall up to 8 mm. thick and spongy, when dry 2–5 mm. thick, smooth, warted or sometimes with protuberances up to 3 mm. long; apex protruding up to 1 cm. when dry.

    Rain-forest, lakesides, riverine, ground-water forest, sometimes on rocks; 700–1800 m.
