    Stem
    Stems with branched hairs when young, the hairs appressed, obscuring the surface, soon becoming woody distinct ridges resembling stipule scars visible between the petioles
    Leaves
    Leaves opposite, petiolate blades elliptic, 16 – 20 × 7.5 – 9 cm, margins entire, apex very shortly acuminate, base attenuate, upper surface ± glabrous except for some branched hairs along the midrib near the base, lower surface appearing paler, with a dense appressed indumentum of pale interwoven hairs obscuring the surface, individual hairs not visible to the naked eye, the venation raised, also with yellow sessile glands petioles c. 3 cm (most seen are damaged), indumentum as stems

    Inflorescence probably axillary (difficult to be certain from specimen fragments), peduncles 4 – 7 cm long, indumentum as young stems, laxly branching at first but flowers congested in terminal, densely hairy clusters almost appearing sessile bracts linear, 2 – 5 mm pedicels difficult to determine bracteoles linear to very narrowly obovate, 1 – 3 mm long, fringed by branched hairs and subtending the terminal clusters of flowers when very narrowly ovate

    Calyx cupular, c. 1 mm long, with 4 shallow triangular lobes, marked by small thickened tips, outer surface with branched hairs, covering but not obscuring surface, also with yellow sessile glands, inner surface glabrous

    Corolla white (Elmer 1910), outer surface with branched hairs on the back of the lobes, also with yellow sessile glands, inner surface glabrous

    Stamens 4, filaments seen before anthesis only, anthers elliptic, with numerous yellow sessile glands where they attach to the connective, dehiscing through longitudinal slits

    Damp woods 1750 m [5750 ft, Elmer 1910].
    Conservation
    Endemic to Mount Apo, a natural park with forest cleared at 1000 m and below, but present at higher altitudes (BirdLife International 2010c). Callicarpa apoensis was collected by Elmer at c. 1750 m, as noted in his protologue no altitude is recorded for Clemens Bur. Sci. 15639 (NY). Apparent threats within the National Park are forest clearance by settlers — the area is home to six ethnic tribes (BirdLife International 2010c). Because there is only one given collecting locality for this species, it is not possible to calculate either EOO or AOO. However, given that Callicarpa is known only from one area within the park, from two collections, and Elmer noted it to be ‘very rare’ (Elmer 1910: 862), I suggest that the EOO is less than 420 km2, which is the area recorded as protected in the Mount Apo area (WWF 2011c). I therefore propose a preliminary conservation assessment of Endangered (EN) under B1 (a,biii) and B2 (a,biii), given the threats to habitat reported above.

    Note
    This taxon was described by Elmer as an endemic of Mount Apo, based on his type, Elmer 11491. Subsequently, the conspecific Clemens Bur. Sci. 15639 was collected. Unfortunately, neither collection is in good condition, the leaves having turned brittle, fragmenting easily, nor does either consist of much apart from a few leaves and bits of inflorescence. Based on this rather poor material, I conclude, along with Elmer, that Callicarpa apoensis is related to C. subalbida Elmer, but its leaves are wider, shorter at the apex, and the indumentum of the lower surface not so distinct. In addition, the corolla has some branched hairs that of C. subalbida is glabrous.
