    Habit
    Shrub, scrambler or intricate woody climber 1–4 m. tall from a swollen rootstock; stems ± dark purplish brown, ridged and later ± fissured, at first pubescent with yellow or ferruginous hairs, later glabrous, flowering when leafless in dry weather; lateral shoots bearing inflorescences often very reduced and congested with internodes suppressed, up to 1 cm. long; tendrils simple.

    Young leaves broadly ovate, 4 mm. long, 5 mm. wide, later ± round, 1.5–2.8(–6.5) cm. long, 1.7–5.5(–8) cm. wide, ± rounded at the apex, truncate to cordate at the base, serrate, densely pale ferruginous velvety pubescent; petiole 0.1–1.4(–2.5) cm. long; stipules purple-brown, ovate–oblong, 2 mm. long, 1.5 mm. wide, auriculate at base, pubescent.
    Inflorescences
    Inflorescence a branched panicle of umbelliform cymes 1.5–4 cm. long, densely yellowish pubescent; individual cymes or groups of cymes often supported by very densely conferted ± reddish brown bracts like catkins, often branched; these are very reduced branches of second and third inflorescence-axes much condensed; peduncles and axes 0.3–1 cm. long; pedicels (1–)2–3(–6) mm. long, pubescent and with sparse to dense orange glands.
    Calyx
    Calyx 1.5 mm. wide, truncate or ± lobed, ± glabrous to pubescent.
    Corolla
    Petals greenish cream or yellow-green, 1–2 mm. long, 0.7–1 mm. wide, puberulous.
    Disc
    Disk yellow.
    Fruits
    Fruit glaucous, green flushed reddish, ellipsoid, 0.9–1.3(–1.5) cm. long, 5.5(–10) mm. wide, glabrous except for a few sparse hairs when very young, smelling of vitamin B, ± edible.
    Seeds
    Seed ellipsoid, 9–12 mm. long, 5–7 mm. wide, the sides strongly ribbed appearing coarsely rugose and wrinkled when dry.
    Habitat
    Acacia desert thornbush, Acacia-Commiphora scrub and Combretum, Entada, Sterculia, Acacia, Boscia, Adansonia scrubby woodland, mostly on rocky outcrops; 700–1350 m.
