    Habit
    Shrub or small tree 0.8–8 m. tall; green twigs glabrescent to densely pubescent, older stems covered with pale tissue-like bark which flakes off to reveal darker underlayer.
    Leaves
    Leaves restricted to green stems or occasionally on older stems, not always fully mature at time of flowering; blades narrowly ovate to ovate or occasionally broadly ovate, 1.5–13 cm. long, 1–7 cm. wide, acute to subacuminate, sometimes acuminate or obtuse to rounded at apex, obtuse to rounded or sometimes acute at base, herbaceous, dull to slightly shiny above, glabrous to densely pubescent on both faces; lateral nerves in 4–5 main pairs; tertiary nerves apparent; domatia present as membranous pockets, ciliate; petioles 2–5(– 10) mm. long; stipules triangular-acuminate, 4–7 mm. long, with lobe decurrent when mature.

    Flowers scented or not, 4-merous, borne in 6–70-flowered pedunculate compact corymbs; peduncle 0.3–1.5 cm. long, pubescent; inflorescence-branches fairly short, rather acutely angled; pedicels 0.3–1(–1.5) cm. long, pubescent; bracteoles inconspicuous.
    Calyx
    Calyx-tube 1 mm. long, broader than long, pubescent or glabrous save for a few hairs towards base; limb 0.5 mm. long, irregularly dentate, ciliate.
    Corolla
    Corolla greenish white (and/or yellow); tube 1.25–3 mm. long, pubescent at throat but lacking definite ring of deflexed hairs; lobes oblong, 1.25–2 mm. long, 1–1.5 mm. wide, obtuse to rounded.
    Anthers
    Anthers reflexed.
    Pistil
    Style up to 6 mm. long; stigmatic knob 1 mm. long, obscurely ribbed; disk glabrous.
    Fruits
    Fruit black when mature, broadly oblong in outline, 5–6 mm. long, 7.5–8 mm. wide, not or scarcely indented; pyrene ± ellipsoid, 5–6 mm. long, 3.5 mm. wide, rugulose.
    Habitat
    In thickets and scrub, often on rocky hillsides; 240–1525 m.

    Calyx tube 1 mm long, broader than long, pubescent or glabrous save for a few hairs towards the base; limb 0.5 mm long, irregularly dentate, ciliate.
    Corolla
    Corolla greenish-white (or yellow); tube 1.25–3 mm long, pubescent at throat but without a well defined ring of deflexed hairs; lobes 1.25–2 × 1–1.5 mm long, oblong, obtuse to rounded.
    Anthers
    Anthers reflexed.
    Style
    Style up to 6 mm long.
    Pollen presenter
    Pollen presenter 1 × 0.5 mm long, obscurely ribbed; disk glabrous.
