    Habit
    Perennial white parasite on tree roots.
    Stem
    Stem stout, 3–5 cm long, ± 1 cm thick, glabrous
    Leaves
    Leaves absent or reduced to scales; scales broadly ovate, 5–8 mm long and wide, acute, glabrous; bracts violet, ovate to lanceolate, up to 10 mm long, 4 mm wide
    Flowers
    Flowers large, up to 6 cm long, in racemes; pedicels up to 20 mm, with a bracteole just below the calyx, glabrous
    Calyx
    Calyx tubular, 11–12 mm long, shortly toothed; teeth 2–3 mm, ± acute, glabrous
    Corolla
    Corolla tube white, throat yellow, expanding beyond calyx, 4–5 cm long; lobes purple, rounded, ± 10 mm long
    Filaments
    Filaments glabrous, sterile anther locule long-acuminate.
    Style
    Style club-shaped, scarcely exserted
    Fruits
    Mature capsule not seen.
    Ecology
    Thickets and forest, shaded ground; 30–450 m
    Conservation
    Known only from the collections cited above where the area is under some pressure and habitat degradation; assessed here as Near Threatened (NT)
    Note
    A collection from Tanzania, Pangani District: Mkwaja Ranch, Frontier Tanzania 3035!, comes closest to H. kenyensis, but has a longer calyx (17 mm) and corolla lobes (15 mm). The corolla tube is densely pubescent unlike the sparsely pubescent corolla of H. kenyensis. With more material this may qualify as a new taxon.
