Habit
Herb, 0.2–0.5 m tall, from a taproot; stems and leaves ± softly pilose with spreading to ± appressed hairs
Leaves
Leaves lanceolate to narrowly elliptic, 2–18 x 0.5–2.5 cm, attenuate at the base, acute at the apex, the upper ones with clasping bases, the lower ones petiolate
Inflorescences
Inflorescences usually with paired branches, quickly elongating and becoming lax, up to c. 25 cm long; pedicels 2–4 mm long, elongating to 5–18 mm and recurved in fruit
Calyx
Calyx-lobes ovate-lanceolate, 2.5–4(–6) mm long, hairy outside
Corolla
Corolla blue; tube c. 2.5 mm long; lobes c. 4–5 mm long
Style
Style c. 1 mm long, elongating in fruit
Fruits
Nutlets compressed obovoid to subglobose, 4–5 mm in diam., covered ± all over with c. 0.5 mm long glochidiate spines; fruiting style up to 3 mm long, angular.
