Succulent perennial 5–15 cm high, branching mostly from near the base, forming clumps to 10 cm in diam.; roots fibrous

Branches terete, 1–2.5 cm thick, 10–14-angled; angles separated by distinct grooves, sinuately toothed, with teeth 2–4 mm apart

Spine-shields separate, obovate, 1–4.5 x 1–3.5 mm; spines extremely variable in length, mostly 0.5–3 mm, with a few interspersed to 1.5 cm long; prickles to 1 mm long, or usually vestigial
