Succulent perennial to 35 cm high and in diam., much-branched from a short stem to form a rounded “cushion”; roots fibrous
Morphology Branches
Branches terete, 1–1.5 cm thick, with very shallow rounded tubercles c. 1 cm apart in 5 longitudinal or scarcely spiralled series
Morphology General Spines
Spine-shields quite separate, prominent, rounded to very broadly obovate, 3–5 x 2.5–4.5 mm, dark grey; spines 8–11 mm long; prickles vestigial, evident only on young growth

Ecology

Note
Two taxa are probably involved here, suggested especially by the behaviour of material in cultivation. The typical form is distinguished by terete, uniformly green branches, with rounded spine-shields in spiral series. The other, which may be distinct, has more compact variegated branches with 5 very obtuse angles formed by obovate spine-shields in longitudinal series.
