Branches spreading, terete, 1–1.5 cm thick; basal part of the plant (up to 10 cm) with small tightly congested tubercles 1–2 mm apart in 10–12 longitudinal series, with spine-shields orbicular, c. 0.5 mm in diam., bearing very slender paired spines and prickles 4–6 mm long, tightly interlaced; upper branches with prominent rounded tubercles c. 5 mm apart, crowned by the spine-shields and forming 7 longitudinal ridges separated by deep grooves
