Morphology General Habit
Shrub or small tree 2·1–8 m. high, sometimes sarmentose or scandent, with spines up to 2 cm. long, terminating short axillary branches usually on older parts, without latex; branches ± flattened, ± angular, purplish-brown and chocolate-to fawn-puberulous when young, becoming terete, striate, with numerous pale lenticels.

Leaves not fasciculate, petiolate, glabrous; lamina pale to yellowish-or mid-green, concolorous or paler below, (3)3·6–11·2(17) × (1·4)1·8–5·5(8) cm., elliptic or elliptic-oblong to ovate or oblanceolate, obtuse (or rarely shortly acuminate on juvenile leaves) to rounded at the apex, with margin shallowly crenulate-serrulate, angustate to cuneate or rarely rounded at the base, coriaceous, with lateral nerves and densely reticulate venation more prominent below than above; petiole 2–9 mm. long.
