Fertile spikes many, 1.2–3.2 cm. long (to 5 cm. long, fide Ungern-Sternberg), 4.5–5.5 mm. in diameter, thick, cylindrical or somewhat tapering above, each of about 8–15 segments whose margins are about 1.75–2.5 mm. apart vertically, not or only very slightly hiding the fruiting calyces.

Central fruiting calyx of each group of three with a flattened apex about 1.52 mm. long and wide, when dry appearing wider than long, when softened by boiling about as long as wide; upper margin of the apex somewhat arcuate, lateral margins straight or slightly concave. Each group of three fruiting calyces finally falling away, leaving three little cavities in the spike arranged more or less in a triangle.
