- Morphology General Habit
- Glabrous, minutely papillose perennial herb with a tuberous root ± 5 cm. thick; stems 1–2, fleshy, erect to 15 cm. high, ± 7 mm. thick.

- Leaves very fleshy, obovate, to 6 × 2.5 cm., apex acute, margin entire, often undulate; stipules scale-like to 1 mm. wide, bearing a filament 1–2 mm. long which occasionally hardens into a minute prickle.

- Cymes on peduncles to 2 cm. long, 1–2-forked; bract-cup longer than the involucre, ± 7 × 5 mm., notched for 1/4 between acute apices, green, often tinged purplish, with prominent whitish midribs.
