Morphology General Habit
Shrub or tree (1·)2·5–13·5 m. high; branches angular or striate and grey-green when young, becoming vinous-red with whitish lenticels and eventually grey and terete.

Leaves on young shoots with lamina up to 12·5 cm. long, linear to narrowly oblong-elliptic, with margin irregularly spreading-spinulose-dentate or -denticulate and reticulate venation prominent on both sides; leaves on mature shoots and short shoots apple-green or greyish green, usually concolorous, 2–7 × 0·8–3·1 cm., oblong to elliptic or obovate, obtuse to rounded or apiculate at the apex, with margin shallowly crenulate-denticulate to entire, cuneate to rounded at the base, coriaceous, with densely reticulate venation more prominent below than above; petiole 2·5–5 mm. long.
