Perennial subshrubby herb 30–40(–100) cm. tall from thick woody rootstock; shoots few, unbranched, ± densely shortly ± bifariously spreading pubescent.

Leaves in whorls of 3, drying ± pale green or brownish, oblanceolate to elliptic-oblong, 4–13(–18) cm. long, 1.2–5(–8) cm. wide, acute at the apex, long attenuate at base, distantly serrate save on narrowed part, shortly pubescent and with longer hairs on the midrib beneath, essentially subsessile or petiole 1–2 mm. long.
