Morphology Leaves: Leaves simple or usually pinnately lobed, veins ending in marginal spines, lamina somewhat white-marbled
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences: Inflorescence a group of medium-sized homogamous capitula, each surrounded and overtopped by spiny, leafy bracts
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Florets: Florets all tubular, corollas purple, unequally 5-lobed; receptacle setose
Morphology Reproductive morphology Fruits: Achenes obovoid, compressed, smooth, dark brown; hilum a narrow slit; pappus cream, that of marginal florets barbellate, that of inner florets plumose.
Etymology: Notobasis (from Gr. νωτος, notos, dorsal and βασις, basis, base, because its achenes are attached at the base of their dorsal side.
