Morphology General Habit
A somewhat shrubby herb or slender shrub, variable in habit from decumbent to erect, to 1 m tall or more, glabrous or nearly so; leaves with pinnae in mostly 3–5 pairs; leaflets 8–20 pairs, linear or linear-oblong, 3–9 mm long, of thin texture
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences Peduncles
Peduncles 1–5 cm long; flowers whitish, in small brush-like heads 3–5 mm across
Morphology Reproductive morphology Fruits
Pods 3–8 cm long, 3–5 mm broad, acute or acuminate; seeds oblique, brown, 2 mm long.
Distribution
Cayman Brac. Florida and Texas southward to S. America, and also naturalised in tropical Asia.
Ecology
A weed of secondary thickets and open waste ground.
Recognition
Some writers separate the smaller and larger forms into two species, but there appears to be complete intergradation between the extremes. The Cayman specimen combines the leaf and fruit characters of D. ‘depressus’ with the erect, shrubby habit of typical D. virgatus.
