The native range of this species is S. Florida to Caribbean, Mexico to N. South America. It is a scrambling shrub or tree and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome. It is used as a medicine and for food.

A scrambling or often high-climbing shrub armed with sharp recurved spines; leaves equilaterally ovate, elliptic or oblong (rarely slightly oblique at base), 5–12 cm long, blunt to subacuminate, the margins nearly entire, almost glabrous on both sides except for domatia in the main nerve-axils beneath
