Morphology General Habit
Annual with an erect fleshy stem, few–many-branched upwardly, the nearly terete ascending branches 1.5–2 mm thick between the nodes

Fertile spikes 1–12 cm long, obviously thicker than the sterile branches, their joints about as long as thick, the flowers a little shorter.
Distribution
Little Cayman. Atlantic and Gulf coasts of N. America and the northwestern half of the West Indies (but not reaching Jamaica), also in California; not common.
Ecology
Occurring on sand- spits and salinas.
