Lower Risk: Least Concern.
Distribution
Widely distributed in the Chaco and surrounding regions of northern Argentina (Jujuy, Salta, Formosa, Chaco, Santa Fé, Corrientes, Misiones, Entre Ríos and Buenos Aires (Ezcurra 1999: 91)), Paraguay, central, S and SE Brazil (Pará, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, São Paulo and Paraná (Dubs 1998: 29; Fontella-Pereira et al. 1985: 24; 2004)) and the eastern half of Bolivia.
Ecology
Scrub and disturbed dry forest below c. 650 m, but to about 1500 m in the inter-Andean dry valleys of Bolivia.
Note
We have formally lectotypified Oxypetalum balansae on Balansa 1336 (S) following the precendent of Meyer (1943: 20; 1944: 71) who cited this collection as 'type'. Lillo (1919: 413) listed the type locality as 'Paraguay-Asunción' thereby implying that he also regarded Balansa's collection to be the type. Dubs (1998: 29) later incorrectly cited Malme 1480B (S) as 'holotype'.
