Annual herb 60–150 cm high, erect, much branched; stem usually solitary, sometimes with reddish marks, striate.

Leaves irregularly bipinnatipartite, 4–16 cm long, 2–9 cm wide, segments linear or lanceolate, 0.5–3 mm wide, apices apiculate, scabridulous; petiole absent or up to 35 mm long.

Capitula in lax terminal cymes; peduncle to 8 cm long; involucre 7–15 mm long; outer phyllaries 8(–13), green, sparsely hairy, inner phyllaries yellow to orange with scarious margins, glabrous or nearly so; paleae 6–10 mm long, brown.
