Perennial herb, 0.6–2 m high, stems erect, several from a woody rootstock, ± glabrous.

Leaves opposite or ternate, sessile and simple, sometimes deeply lobed or pinnately 3-lobed, 3–22 cm long, 0.6–4 cm wide, base cuneate to cordate, margins crenate, serrate, deeply toothed or lobed, apex acute, with 2 lines of scabrid hairs on margins, otherwise scabrid to glabrous.
