Morphology General Habit
Perennial herb, with a small woody rootstock and annual stems 20-75(-100) cm high; root-crown and base of stem with pale brown lanate tufts of hair; stems one or several, erect, unbranched except for the inflorescence, leafy, shortly crispate-pubescent.

Leaves mostly in whorls or false whorls of 3, distally sometimes opposite or subopposite, sessile, (narrowly) ovate, 0.6-5 cm long, 0.5-2 cm wide, base cuneate to cordate, margins coarsely serrate with callose tips, apex obtuse, shortly apiculate, glandular and crispate-pubescent or scabridulous on margins and main veins beneath.

Capitula in lax to rather compact terminal and upper axillary compound corymbiform cymes; involucres obconic-cylindrical, 5-10 mm long, 6-12 mm diameter at flowering time, without or sometimes with an outer series of elliptic to lanceolate, foliaceous, shortly strigose, apiculate bracteoles; phyllaries many, 3-4-seriate, (narrowly) ovate, obtuse to truncate, pungent-apiculate, the inner acute, fimbriate-pectinate on upper margins, 5.5-9 mm long, all more or less pubescent and darker in upper part and deeply purple-tinged on the membranous margins.

Florets many; corolla purple or blue-purple, 5-9.5 mm long, lobes 2.3-4 mm long, sparsely glandular or glabrous.

Phyllaries numerous, many-seriate, somewhat cartilaginous with narrow membranous or subhyaline margins, puberulous to glabrescent, margins ± ciliate; the outer from c. 2 mm. long, the inner to c. 9 mm. long, ovate to broadly oblong-rotund to lorate in the innermost, shortly acuminate-cuspidate to tapering acuminate with ± squarrose purple pungent tips.

Corollas purple, 5–9 mm. long, narrowly tubular widening upwards; lobes to c. 4 mm. long, linear, sparsely glandular-hairy or glabrous.

Achenes stramineous, 2–2.2 mm. long, narrowly barrel-shaped, bluntly 5-angled, faintly 1–2 dark-grooved on the faces, truncate with a shallow rimmed depression at the apex, truncate at the base, smooth and ± polished; pappus of few very caducous barbellate setae 1–2 mm. long.
