Morphology General Habit
Perennial woody herb or shrub, erect to scrambling, 0.6–3(–4) m tall, the whole plant smelling of vanilla; stems pubescent to glabrous.

Leaves lanceolate, elliptic to ovate, 3–24 cm long, 1–9 cm wide, base subtruncate, rounded or cuneate and slightly decurrent onto the nearly always auriculate petioloid base, margins sinuate-serrate or serrate-bidentate, apex acute to obtuse, sometimes somewhat attenuate and minutely acuminate-apiculate, glabrous or somewhat pubescent at least on veins beneath; auricles often, usually coarsely, lobed.

Capitula discoid, numerous in moderately dense terminal cymes; stalks of the individual capitula pubescent; involucre broadly cylindrical, 4.5–9 mm long, 3–8 mm in diameter; bracts of calyculus 7–10, linear or lanceolate, 1.5–9.5 mm long, glabrous or with a few mostly marginal hairs; phyllaries 8–21, usually 13 or 21, 4–8 mm long, glabrous or thinly pubescent.
