Shrub or subshrub; cystoliths present.

Leaves variegated, dark green with deep pink or purple blotching above when young, becoming whitish on older leaves, elliptic, 12–30 cm long, attenuate and usually with sessile auriculate base, margin serrulate, apex acuminate, upper surface sparsely pubescent.

Inflorescence a pedunculate axillary or terminal spike, subtended by a series of foliose bracts resembling reduced leaves; floral bracts imbricate, obovate, apex acute to emarginate, sometimes reflexed, surface densely pilose and/or pubescent including glandular hairs.

Calyx with 5 linear-spathulate lobes, posterior 3 lobes often united in lower half, as densely hairy as bracts.

Distribution
