The native range of this species is Tropical & Subtropical America, Subantarctic Islands, Zimbabwe to S. Africa, W. Indian Ocean, New Guinea, E. & SE. Australia, New Zealand. It is a perennial or epiphyte and grows primarily in the wet tropical biome. It is used as a medicine and has environmental uses.
