The native range of this species is Canada to Central & E. U.S.A., Cuba, California to W. South America. It is a tuberous geophyte and grows primarily in the temperate biome. It is has environmental uses, as a medicine and for food.

Biogeografic region: Amazonia, Andean, Caribbean, Orinoquia. Elevation range: 200–1130 m a.s.l. Native to Colombia. Colombian departments: Antioquia, Magdalena, Valle del Cauca.
