Morphology General Habit
A scapose perennial herb up to c. 60 cm. tall, from a stout semi-woody taproot.

Leaves numerous in a basal rosette, (4)5–12(20) x 1–4 cm., oblanceolate to narrowly elliptic in outline, sinuate-dentate to pinnatilobed, obtuse to rounded at the apex, attenuate below, ± densely hispid.

Florets numerous, corollas c. 15 mm. long; corolla tube 5–6 mm. long, somewhat 5-ribbed and with an incomplete ciliate fringe where the tube splits to form the ligule, otherwise glabrous; ligule ± erect 8–9 x 2.5 mm., strap-shaped, exserted above the involucre, yellow sometimes with a greenish or reddish stripe outside, glabrous.

Achenes all with long slender beaks; achene body 4–5 mm. long, cylindric-fusiform, finely c. 14-ribbed, scabridulous, tapering ± abruptly into a 4.5–7 mm. long beak; beaks of the outer achenes shorter than the inner; pappus 2-seriate, the outer pappus of short barbellate setae, the inner of plumose setae to c. 9 mm. long.
