Compositae, H. Beentje, C. Jeffrey & D.J.N. Hind. Flora of Tropical East Africa. 2005

Morphology General Habit
Herb, with basal rosette and a single flowering stem 0.3–1 m high; stem unbranched except for inflorescence, sparsely pilose with tubercle-based hairs.
Morphology Leaves
Basal leaves suberect, petiolate or nearly so, the petiole up to 13 cm long, blade narrowly elliptic or narrowly obovate, 6–30 cm long, 2.5–6 cm wide, base attenuate, margins sinuate and broad-dentate with callose tips, apex obtuse or acute, sparsely pilose beneath and with impressed glands, similar above but more scabridulous; cauline leaves absent or very few, the ones close to the base similar to the basal leaves but sessile with semi-amplexicaul base, the distal ones much smaller and very narrow.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences Capitulum
Capitula 8–16 mm long, heterogamous, several in fairly lax corymbs; stalks of individual capitula 1–10 mm long; phyllaries pale green, narrowly triangular, 4–9 mm long, acute, pubescent.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Florets
Ray florets yellow, in a single row, tube filiform, 1.5–2.5 mm long, limb 5–8.5 mm long, 1.5–2 mm wide, 2–3-toothed, style 5–5.7 mm long; disc florets yellow, tube narrowly infundibuliform from a widened base, 4–4.5 mm long, lobes 0.7–0.9 mm long and slightly pilose; anthers brown, 1.8–2.6 mm long and eventually almost completely exserted, style 5–5.4 mm long.

Morphology General Habit
Sturdy biennial or perennial rosette herb, the solitary flowering stem 0.6–2.4 m high, woody at base, unbranched except for the inflorescence; stem pubescent and scabrid.
Morphology Leaves
Leaves of two kinds:radical leaves petiolate, the petiole 5–10 cm long, the blade elliptic or oblanceolate, 30–60 cm long, 7–12.5 cm wide, base cuneate and decurrent, margins coarsely and irregularly dentate, apex acute, scabrid above with tubercle-based hairs, pubescent to tomentose beneath; cauline leaves smaller and diminishing in size upwards, the proximal sessile, the more distal with cordate, auriculate and semi-amplexicaul base, otherwise similar to radical leaves, 2–32 cm long, 1–19 cm wide.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences Capitulum
Capitula 5–9 mm long, heterogamous, in fairly dense terminal corymbs arranged in their turn in large leafy corymbs or panicles; stalks of individual capitula 1–3 mm long; phyllaries linear-lanceolate, 2–5(–8) mm long, acute, the outer pubescent, the inner ciliate.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Florets
Florets yellow; outer florets few, tube filiform, 3–3.6 mm long and distally glandular, lobes 0.2–0.4 mm long and glandular, style 3.2–4.2 mm long; inner florets many, tube narrowly infundibuliform with a slightly widened base, 3.3–4.2 mm long, lobes 0.4–0.5 mm long and glandular, anthers 1.7–1.8 mm long, style 4–5 mm long.
