Shrub or herb 0.6–2 m, much branched, slightly aromatic; branches dark purplish brown, cylindrical, striate, pubescent or puberulous with the hairs tuberculate, occasionally glandular.

Leaves (sub-)sessile, slightly fleshy, obovate or oblanceolate, 1–5 cm long, 0.5–2(–3) cm wide (in Beesley 38 with basal leaves to 15 cm long and 6 cm wide, with long-attenuate base), base attenuate, margins dentate or almost entire, apex obtuse, pubescent with tubercle-based hairs andglandular on both surfaces.

Capitula 9–15 mm long, solitary or up to 7 in terminal or lateral corymbs, stalks of individual capitula 5–25 mm long; phyllaries multiseriate, with purplish or reddish streaks, ovate to lanceolate, the innermost linear, 2–8 mm long, 0.3–1.5 mm wide, acute, ciliate and fimbriate, pubescent on the outermost but becoming more glabrous towards the centre, glandular; inner phyllaries deciduous after anthesis; receptacle concave or flat, 5–6 mm wide.

Florets pink to purplish, scented; outer florets in several series, filiform, tube 3.8–5 mm long, minutely toothed at the apex; style 4.6–5 mm long with filiform branches; inner florets 7–11, tube 4.8–6.5 mm long, lobes 0.4–0.5 mm long, glandular; anthers 1.9–2.1 mm long with short tails and an ovate appendage; style 5.9–7.5 mm long with seemingly undivided but closely parallel papillose branches.
