Buddleja Houst. ex L.

[FZ]
Loganiaceae, A. J. M. Leeuwenberg. Flora Zambesiaca 7:1. 1983
- Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Calyx
- Calyx green, campanulate or nearly so, less often cup–shaped or obconical; lobes usually subequal, from slightly longer to much shorter than the tube, erect, entire.
- Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Corolla
- Corolla cup–shaped, campanulate, funnel– or salver–shaped, variously coloured, from white to orange or to dark violet, or purple, often with an orange throat, sometimes darker at anthesis, outside with an indumentum of stellate and/or glandular hairs, but glabrous at the base, which is included in the calyx tube, and at the apices of the lobes, less often entirely glabrous or hairy on the entire outer side of the lobes; lobes usually shorter than the tube, imbricate in African species, elliptic or suborbicular, at the apex rounded, obtuse, or emarginate, entire to crenate, spreading or erect.
- Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Androecium Stamens
- Stamens inserted in the corolla, from the base of the tube to the mouth, with a certain degree of variation in a single species; filaments mostly short or very short, long only if stamens well–exserted (section Chilianthus); anthers oblong or less often subcircular in outline, mostly glabrous, apiculate to emarginate at the apex, mostly deeply cordate at the base, introrse; cells parallel or sometimes slightly divergent at the base, discrete, longitudinally dehiscent throughout.
- Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Gynoecium Pistil
- Pistil: ovary superior, usually 2–celled. Style short or long, included or exserted; stigma often large, clavate, capitate, or less often bilobate.
- Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Gynoecium Ovary Placenta
- In each cell one axile placenta with several to many ovules.
- Morphology Reproductive morphology Fruits
- Capsule bivalved, septicidal; valves mostly splitting up to the middle. Fruit a capsule or sometimes a berry, subglobose to narrowly ellipsoid, surrounded or subtended by the persistent calyx and often at the same time by the persistent corolla.
- Morphology General Habit
- Shrubs, less often trees or suffrutescent herbs, 0·25–30 m. high, mostly with a white or pale grey indumentum of stellate hairs which dries usually rusty on the branchlets, the lower side of the leaves, and the inflorescences.
- Morphology General Colleters
- Colleters absent.
- Morphology Stem
- Branchlets terete to quadrangular, in the latter case sometimes narrowly winged. Bark rough, fibrous, longitudinally fissured.
- Morphology Leaves
- Leaves opposite and those of a pair equal, less often subopposite, or in a few species alternate, petiolate, sessile, or — if opposite — sometimes connate–perfoliate.
- Morphology Leaves Stipules
- Stipules leafy, reduced to a line, or absent.
- Morphology Leaves Leaf lamina
- Lamina circular to very narrowly elliptic, entire, crenate to dentate, or sometimes evenlobed.
- Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences
- Inflorescence terminal and/or axillary, thyrsoid, paniculate, or variously reduced even to a single globose head.
- Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers
- Flowers 4–merous, actinomorphic.
- Morphology Reproductive morphology Seeds
- Seeds pale to dark brown, obliquely fusiform or obliquely polyhedral, winged or not, laterally compressed or not, reticulate or less often smooth or ridged.
