The native range of this species is SE. Mexico to Central America, Dominica to Brazil. It is a climber and grows primarily in the wet tropical biome.

Belize, Brazil North, Costa Rica, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico Southeast, Nicaragua, Panamá, Suriname, Trinidad-Tobago, Windward Is.
