General Description
Scandent herb. Stem up to 3 m long, 4 cm diam., internodes 3.5-5.5 cm long. Cataphyll thick 21-40 cm long, pale green on the upper half pink-suffused, soon disintegrating and gradually breaking up. LEAVES: Petiole robust, spongy, in young plants strongly swollen, terete, up to 78 cm long and 1.5 cm thick towards the apex, 2 cm thick below, sheathed part 6-8.7 cm long. Leaf blade subcoriaceous, outline broadly ovate, 47-68 cm long, 38-53 cm wide, cordate at the base, posterior lobes rounded or obtusely angled, each lobe 14-25 cm wide, separated by a spathulate or obovate, 14-20 cm deep sinus. Obtuse towards the apex, the apex itself acuminate (1.0-1.5 cm), both surfaces glossy, adaxially midrib flat, primary lateral veins sulcate, 5-7 on each side, orientated at an angle of 55-58º, veins strong from each of the two posterior ribs, 2-3 departing on each side, posterior rib naked in the sinus for 3.2-5.4 cm. INFLORESCENCE in threes. Peduncle to 13 cm long. Spathe 17.5 cm long, tube 9.5x3.8 cm, limb externally green from white-green, internally intense wine-coloured throughout (at least in the tube). Spadix up to 16 cm long, sessile nevertheless the axis at the front naked for 1 cm. Pistillate flowers: ovary 8-9 locular, ovules 3-5 in each locule, affixed above the base. Staminate flowers (from the base to the apex of the spadix) 6-4(-3)-androus. INFRUCTESCENCE: 9.8x2.5 cm. Berries 0.4-0.5 cm long, truncate at the apex, cream-coloured, seeds ellipsoid 1.4x0.65 mm smooth yellow-brown.
